California HSTA is a motorcycle Sport-Touring club open to all brands
(despite the historical reference to Honda in our name). Our emphasis
is on responsible, safe, sport-touring -- regardless of the type of bike you
own. Responsible means wearing appropriate safety gear, keeping your
bike in good running condition, riding courteously around other vehicles,
and maintaining reasonable speed (taking into account traffic, weather, road
conditions, and especially, rider ability). We may ride briskly at
times, but have no illusions about what's appropriate for public roadways
versus the track...
We
host a variety of rides through the year, including day trips, weekend
trips, and participating in national events with our parent HSTA. Our
rides typically focus on twisty, fun roads with freeways and major highways
simply being a means to get to the good twisty roads. While we
typically stop for breaks and perhaps meals, we endeavor to demonstrate a
good image and safe riding habits by discouraging consumption of any alcohol
while riding (bars are typically NOT our destination).
If
you'd like more information about CalHSTA, please see "About
CalHSTA." Additional information about HSTA benefits in general
can be found in our Library section. Joining
is as simple as filling out the
Application Form. additional details and information can be found
at our national HSTA website.

California
HSTA member distribution. Ever wonder where all our members are
located in California? Well, if you have
Google Earth installed on your
computer, here's a file full placemarks for every
city we have members in, labeled with the number of members residing
there (e.g., "Los
Angeles (5)"). So, for those of you who
have
Google Earth, you can open the attachment, zoom out to see the
whole state, and see where our membership is generally clumped:
CalHSTA_Dist.kmz
If you don't already have
Google Earth installed, it's free and
can be downloaded at
http://earth.google.com/. With
Google Earth, you can get a satellite view of any place on
Earth (some places with better resolution than others), zoom in/out,
even view terrain (angle your view and see the mountains). Once you
get handy with it, it's amazing (and a great time waster) to follow
your favorite mountain roads around, see where roads go that you
haven't dared explore yet, etc. It can even search by address, so
you can zoom in on your house and neighborhood, etc. You can even
store placemarks for reference later. That just scratches the surface of what it can do --
it's really quite a cool tool.
For those of you into the numbers, as of last
accounting, we have 35 members in the
general Northern California area, 7 in Central, and 55 in Southern.
Now you can look at your general area and see how many fellow HSTA'ers
are around you. Now that we have the on-line forum/message boards up,
hopefully you'll be more inclined to try to contact people around you
and organize some rides... =o)

We are
still looking for volunteers willing to lead rides. Come on, this is fun, easy work and gets you out on
your bike. Please give consideration to whether you might be
willing to lead a ride in your area sometime in the next few months.
If you have any questions or would like more information about what is
really involved, please contact
Leonard Lloyd
or
Brian Wood.
Our next
STAR (Sport
Touring
Association
Rendezvous) will take place
April 6 - 9 in Kerrville, TX! For more
information, go to
http://www.txhsta.com/Star2008.html. A
short promotional video can also be found on YouTube:

If you can attend, it would be great to have some California
representation!
